Where there's smoke, there's Fire - Central Oregon 2014

Central Oregon, 2014.
August... Fire Season.
Normally clear skies were hazy with smoke as we were between two big fires along Highway 26.

The towns of John Day and Prairie City were enveloped with clouds of smoke.

Ring of smoke puffs out as the mountain fire starts in the distance.

 

This is smoke from over 50 miles away peering over the mountains.

We took a stroll bird watching through Stanley Park which is on the edge of downtown Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada.

At Mount Seymour Provincial Park, we took a walk through damp British Columbia rainforest.

As we crossed a footbridge on the Baden-Powell trail,

I really liked the sound of the water trickling down the mossy logs and across the stones into a small rivulet.   Listen!

These tiny but dedicated creatures are rapidly moving and harvesting oak leaf litter after the Calabasas Fire in June 2016.

Sometimes fire creates opportunity.

The oaks in the Calabasas fire may be toasted, but not taken down.

 Firefighters saved the park structures.

And the non native grasses and shrubs burned.

 But there is hope for new growth!

After the Fire - Calabasas, CA

Fire.
We all dread it.
There's nothing like suddenly smelling smoke from a wildfire.
 Where is it? Is it close?

This one was just a few miles away. Car accident into a power pole.

Brushfires burn hot and fast in the bone dry chaparral in Southern California. 

Our native oaks and black walnut trees have seen it before.
 They scorch, but still stand.

the leaves may burn but the young walnuts survive

Using the highway as a firebreak, the firefighters stopped the 500+ acre blaze from burning homes and businesses.
