A Winter's Walk at Lake Tahoe, California

Lake Tahoe sits astride the borders of California and Nevada well over a mile high in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

We went for an end of the year snowshoe and stroll in the brisk, quiet air.

We stayed on the California side in South Lake Tahoe. 

Breath deeply!   The Lake level is about 6,224 feet!

The lakeside has fascinating pebble and boulders - and miniature ice sculptures from the melting and re-freezing of the wet ground.

Band-tailed Pigeons take over Feederwatch!

Band-tailed pigeons (Patagioenas fasciata) are some of the larger  native birds we find in our backyard. 

Flocks of over 35 at a time have come to jostle each other and eat in shifts from our feeder.

 

 
They usually eat acorns, nuts and small fruit that grows wild in the neighborhood.

 

But they LOVE the shelled peanuts in the bottom of the feeder tray!!

 Take the tram up to look at where some little folk live!

Sequoia National Park - More Than Big Trees!

California's Sequoia National Park - is more than just big trees!

Approaching from the south, on HWY 138, you'll find the Foothills Visitor Center and park headquarters.

In the picnic area look for local Acorn Woodpeckers (Melanerpes formicivorus) and their larder of acorns in the bark of the large oak tree. This branch was just above the table.

Look what you might miss if you forget to take the trail to Hospital Rock!

Baby Moose Loose in Alaska!

Just outside of Anchorage, Alaska is a wetlands area called 

Potter Marsh.

It's an easy walk with wildlife viewing and a beautiful panorama of the marshlands.  

We noticed a group of folks peering quietly over the boardwalk's railing and saw...

Squanga Lake, Yukon, Canada has some of the most idyllic scenery. Glassy lake conditions at night are beautiful.

The northern pike here are often in the reeds!! 

Look for the bald eagle landing in a tree at the end of the video!

Squanga is a First Nations word for the whitefish that swim on the muddy bottom.

Sea Birds on the Great Barrier Reef - Michaelmas Cay, Queensland, Australia

22 nautical miles from Cairns, Queensland, is Michaelmas Cay, a bird reserve and incredible place to snorkel, dive or do some bird watching! 

A dive boat, certified for ecotourism, takes you directly to a strip 

of sand beside the protected nesting sites.
