The sounds are the calls of the Sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) defending their territory - slowed down 150%!

As with most deserts, the Gobi has life in  miniature, and in the extremes.

 The wind is strong most of the year, so much of the plant and animal life hugs the ground.

They look for a high point ... but there are no trees.

Sometimes only a foot off the ground on a rock pile road marker is best you can get!

See the Mendenhall Glacier, Southeast Alaska

Just a few miles from Juneau, Alaska has one of the most visited glaciers in the world.

Also one of the most beautiful streams. 

Where does all this water come from?




Visiting Mendenhall glacier recently, I was surprised how much it had retreated just since my last visit in 1990.
The huge waterfall you see below was just at the front of the glacier then.

Keri was shocked.

 

In 1968 the photo taken from this perspective would have been of the front face of the glacier. Now the face is well over a mile up the channel from the waterfall.

Mendenhall glacier was also much broader and thicker only a few years ago.

656 feet were lost on its east side in 2004 and 269 feet lost on its west side in 2005. 
And this doesn't take into account the loss of the ice height!

This important video below plays at the Mendenhall glacier visitor center. Constantly.

Sea Birds on the Great Barrier Reef - Michaelmas Cay, Queensland, Australia

22 nautical miles from Cairns, Queensland, is Michaelmas Cay, a bird reserve and incredible place to snorkel, dive or do some bird watching! 

A dive boat, certified for ecotourism, takes you directly to a strip 

of sand beside the protected nesting sites.

The sounds were fantastic!  So have a look at the video and listen to the recording from the beach. Wait for the surprise!

Wind Across Western Mongolia

The wind can howl whisper to you in Mongolia.

The roads within Mongolia become dirt tracks across the landscape. Here there is little to stop the wind.

This is all one highway down the valley.
In Mongolia, like in the old Western US, you wouldn't want to ride horseback on a trail directly behind someone else and eat their dust! 

Most of the plant and animal life stays down within an inch or two of the rocky soil.
