Grand Teton National Park - A Sudden Storm in Wyoming

Grand Teton National Park

Clouds reflected perfectly from the pond as we drove up through the sagebrush toward Jenny Lake.
The sky might be bright and sunny, but things can change rapidly in the mountains.

A white pelican!
The park's elevation ranges from the valley floor at 6,320 feet to 13,770 feet on the summit of the Grand Teton.

Storms can come up quickly as the moist air rises and cools at the peak.

Santana Winds Come to Los Angeles October 29, 2015

The Santana Winds have come to Los Angeles.
 October 29, 2015

The term "Santana winds" is said to have originated in Spanish California when the hot, dry winds were called "devil winds."

Maybe you've heard of them as "SANTA ANA WINDS"?

At the turn of the last century, an Associated Press correspondent mistakenly identified Santana winds as "Santa Ana" winds in a 1901 dispatch.

Raymond Chandler wrote a 1938 short story about them called
 "Red Wind"
"There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks.
Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge."

Mongolia - Listen to the winds across the Gobi Desert

Mongolia - The Gobi Desert

As with most deserts, the Gobi has life in  miniature, and in the extremes.
The wind is strong most of the year, so much of the plant and animal life hugs the ground.
Listen to the wind!

HD

The exception of course,  to ground huggers are the birds.
They look for a high point ... but there are no trees.

Sometimes only a foot off the ground on a rock pile road marker is best you can get!

 Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular.

Ger camp "Hotels" in the Gobi.
Way cool!
